Lars Von Trier’s first feature film, THE ELEMENT OF CRIME, is a futuristic horror-thriller, murder-mystery set in a post-apocalyptic Europe where morals are so utterly corrupted that one man’s attempt to unravel them is doomed to failure.
Fisher has returned to Cairo after leading a murder investigation in Europe. Obviously traumatised by the experience he remembers little, is obsessive and is plagued by crippling headaches. Seeking the help of a hypno-therapist, he travels back in memory and pain… back to Europe.
Europe has changed. Decay and dereliction prevail. A series of bizarre murders - The Lotto Murders - has occurred in Innenstadt harbour. Fisher leads the investigation under the command of Police Chief Kramer, whose methods greatly differ from Fisher’s. He remembers Osborne, his former teacher at the police academy, had previously led this investigation and had established a link between the murders and a surveillance report on a man called Harry Grey. This report on Grey, however, has only blank pages.
Fisher then stumbles across the missing Harry Grey file on a return visit to Osborne’s house. Osborne’s insistence that Grey no longer exists, furthers his determination to resolve the mystery.
Exquisitely shot in an amber sulphurous light, THE ELEMENT OF CRIME seamlessly blends conventions of science-fiction and film noir with the director’s unique technical innovations to create a masterpiece unlike any other film ever made.
