MARY (2005)

Product Image

"A hallucinatory, provocative film ceaselessly torn between the spectre of global violence and the possibility of personal redemption, MARY is classic Ferrara." Adrian Martin, BIFF 2006 "In Abel Ferrara's new film, MARY, both Forest Whitaker and Juliette Binoche (as with the rest of the cast) give such amazing performances that they should be added to the list of the best work of their careers." Film Threat "For the first time since 1996's The Funeral, Ferrara has found a sustainable tone and a story that allows him room to talk about a reverent subject. Somehow, he turns confusion into a concise study on what it means to believe in god in this day and age." Filmcritic.com "A sincere grapple with faith and redemption in serious times." Variety

Synopsis
Mary Magdalene: disciple of Jesus, possessor of the Holy Grail and the catalyst of Abel Ferrara's latest film, MARY, where characters are forever and positively linked by her spirit and mystery.

Tony Childress (Matthew Modine), an infamous, egotistical and obsessive actor/director is playing the lead role of Jesus in his controversial new film, THIS IS MY BLOOD, a Pirandellian film-within-a-film, with Mary Palesi (Juliette Binoche). But when the shoot wraps, she cannot leave the role behind. Refusing his plea to return with him to New York, she heads alone to Jerusalem, on a personal journey towards true enlightenment.

A year later in Manhattan, we find the final member of our trinity, Ted Younger (Forest Whitaker), a superstar network journalist in the midst of his prime time special which is investigating the life and times of Jesus Christ. But when his new-born baby is delivered premature and sickly, he and his wife are faced with a life crisis they are spiritually unprepared for.

Moving from Rome to Jerusalem to New York City, Heather Graham, Marion Coutillard and Marco Leonardi join legendary cinema maverick Abel Ferrara to explore the greatest story ever told, in resonant, revelatory and effortless style.
